Vit.D helpt niet bij hoge bloeddruk bij oudere mensen

In an accompanying editorial, Edward Giovannucci, MD, ScD, of the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, said that "these findings may dampen some of the enthusiasm for vitamin D as a powerful agent in uniformly lowering blood pressure. However, it is important to put this study in context of other evidence."

He pointed to previous trials that have suggested that vitamin D supplementation might reduce blood pressure in populations with lower 25OHD levels and higher parathyroid hormone levels, and that calcium levels might be important when assessing the effects.

"Considering all the evidence, it does not appear likely that vitamin D supplementation will have a strong influence on blood pressure across all populations," Giovannucci wrote. "However, there are hints that there may be modest effects, especially when vitamin D and calcium are considered together."

Zitat:
The RCT consisted of 100 000 IU of oral cholecalciferol or matching placebo every 3 months for 1 year. The results were disappointing because no appreciable change in blood pressure was found. These findings may dampen some of the enthusiasm for vitamin D as a powerful agent in uniformly lowering blood pressure.

Cholecalciferol Treatment to Reduce Blood Pressure in Older Patients With Isolated Systolic Hypertension

The VitDISH Randomized Controlled Trial

August 12, 2013

http://archinte.jamanetwork.com/article ... id=1726994

Zitat:
Objective To test whether high-dose, intermittent cholecalciferol supplementation lowers blood pressure in older patients with isolated systolic hypertension.

Interventions A total of 100 000 U of oral cholecalciferol or matching placebo every 3 months for 1 year.

Conclusions and Relevance Vitamin D supplementation did not improve blood pressure or markers of vascular health in older patients with isolated systolic hypertension.
